Moisture absorbers: the basics

These are the passive tubs, boxes or refillable units filled with hygroscopic crystals (usually calcium chloride) that pull moisture from the air and collect it as liquid.

Advantages:

• Cheap and widely available
• Completely silent, no electricity needed
• Perfect for small, enclosed spaces — wardrobes, cupboards, drawers, under sinks
• No maintenance beyond replacing them

Limitations:

• Low capacity — they can only absorb so much
• They saturate quickly, often within a few weeks, then stop working entirely
• Ineffective for whole rooms or serious humidity
• If forgotten, they simply sit there full and useless

Dehumidifiers: the basics

Active electrical appliances that draw air across a cold coil (compressor) or absorbent wheel (desiccant), extracting far more water.

Advantages:

• Handle entire rooms and high humidity effectively
• Adjustable, with humidity targets and timers
• Can run continuously to a drain if plumbed in

Limitations:

• Need mains power
• The tank fills and the unit stops — in a closed home, often within 2–3 days
• Higher upfront and running cost
• Useless during a power cut
