Why coastal location matters

Compressor vs. desiccant: which suits your home?
There are two main technologies, and the right one depends on how you use your property.
Compressor (refrigerant) dehumidifiers are the most common and cost-effective to run in warmer conditions. They work best when indoor temperatures stay above roughly 15 °C. If you spend winters in the house with the heating on, this is usually the right choice.
Desiccant dehumidifiers use a moisture-absorbing material and perform far better in cold, unheated homes — exactly the situation for a villa left empty over winter. They use slightly more electricity but keep working when the temperature drops, which is when closed coastal homes are most at risk.
For most absent owners on the Silver Coast, a desiccant model is the smarter pick, precisely because the home is cold and unoccupied during the danger months.
Sizing it correctly
Dehumidifier capacity is measured in litres of water extracted per 24 hours:
Studio or 1-bed apartment: 10–12 L/day
2–3 bedroom villa: 16–20 L/day
Large villa or very damp property: 20–25 L/day
Undersizing is the most common mistake — a small unit simply can't keep up with a whole villa, runs constantly and still loses the battle.

The catch nobody mentions
A dehumidifier only protects your home while its tank has space. In a sealed, empty villa, a 20 L unit can fill its tank in two to three days — then it shuts off and does nothing for the rest of the month. The only real solutions are a permanent drain hose to an outlet, or someone physically emptying it on a schedule.
